About Brain Gym® & Educational Kinesiology
Educational Kinesiology (Edu-K), the work of educators Dr. Paul Dennison and Gail E. Dennison, is the study and application of natural movement to enhance all areas of learning and performance. Brain Gym®, the cornerstone of Edu-K, consists of 26 simple movements and activities intended to "support self-awareness and ease of living and learning through safe, simple, and effective movement" (www.braingym.org/about). The Brain Gym exercises, often referred to as "The 26," are based on developmental movements naturally done early in life, when learning to coordinate the eyes, ears, hands, and whole body. Although it is unclear exactly why Brain Gym works as it does, for over 20 years, individuals using the program have reported noticeable and often dramatic reductions in stress, and improvements in concentration and focus, memory, academic skills (reading, writing, math, test taking), listening, communication, physical coordination, organization, attitude, and self-responsibility. Accessible to individuals of all ages, Brain Gym is currently used in more than 87 countries around the world, and has been translated into 40 languages. In addition to Brain Gym, Edu-K includes a variety of other movement-based educational tools including Vision Gym® (movements intended to enhance vision), Double Doodle Play (a movement-based visual art program) and a 5-Step Balance Process (a system for using Brain Gym and related techniques to build resources for attainment of specific personal goals).
The Brain Gym movements and balancing processes can be learned in workshops, and can also be experienced in the form of private balance sessions tailored to individual needs.
